Selfie with a Congressman

April 15, 2016

*** WARNING: this post will be mostly photos and I cannot promise the best quality because they were all taken on my iPhone, sorry but Washington D.C. is so gorgeous and I forgot my camera at home***

This past Wednesday I went to Washington D.C with my AP US Government and Politics class. We left around 6AM then arrived at 10AM. Our itinerary was very relaxed especially since our plans were messed up a few days beforehand.

Our original plan was to tour the White House then meet with our state's Congress man but that was canceled since our President returned from Germany a day early. It was a bit of a disappointment but I think the day was pretty amazing. Instead of touring the White House we went to the Air and Space section of the smithsonian. Personally I'm not fascinated with Air and Space stuff but it was pretty cool. I loved the models and the layouts - I was very impressed.

My favorite exhibit in the Air and Space was the Wright Brothers section. I personally love them ever since I saw their museum in North Carolina.

After spending time in the smithsonian we went to go meet with the Congressman of my state. It was such an honor to get to meet with Ryan Costello. He has a personal connection with my school so it was a mixed conversation of politics and school experience. He personally invited us to meet him at his office after he attends some hearings to vote about different topics.
Fun Fact: Costello is a "freshman", as he called himself, Congressman and this year's new Congressmen/women are the only new class to ever have their picture taken in front of the Capital that is under construction

Our meeting with Ryan Costello was cut a bit short since there was a protest moving towards us and Costello had to leave. My teacher moved us away from the approaching protest immediately and we went in the gallery. From the gallery Costello's assistant guided us underground through very fancy beautiful tunnels to the Congress building. Unfortunately I was not permitted to take photos so I'm sorry!

This is the ceiling of the building where Ryan Costello's office is! Isn't it breathe taking?! The Capital is a truly beautiful place. Very secure too! Every building we wanted to enter had a security check and there were police everywhere - who were very nice!

We did quite a bit of walking, my legs were sore by the end of the trip! We had a lot of freedom to explore so after grabbing some lunch in the smithsonian food court my friends and I made our way down to the Washington Memorial. It was a 30 minute walk from the smithsonian and it was worth it!

I personally did not go to the top, but a few of my friends did and according to them the view is indescribable. I have never been to the nation's capital until this field trip and I can confidently say I hope to go back a few more times before I graduate.

I hope you enjoyed today's post! Have you been Washington D.C. before? If you haven't, you definitely should make your way out this summer!

P.S. I created an Instagram and Pinterest for this blog! I update it almost everyday! Follow it to see me more than just a few times a week (:
