Book Review: The Knockoff

July 24, 2019

Hi y'all! Today's post is a little different compared to what I normally do, but I just finished the book The Knockoff last night and I absolutely loved it! A big reason why I wanted to read it was because it was about fashion.

Most of the books I read aren't about fashion so I was intrigued right off the bat. I loved the plot line, it's about a woman, Imogen Tate who is Editor in Chief of the magazine Glossy, who comes back from a sabbatical and must adjust to the new office environment. Her former assistant, Eve Morton, comes back tot eh magazine to change it into an app attempting to steal Imogen's job.

The prologue opens up with Imogen attending a fashion show in New York Fashion Week which is what truly got me hooked. I think the authors Jo Piazza & Lucy Sykes developed the character Imogen very well. You read the first few chapters and empathize for Imogen as she has overcome breast cancer then goes back to her office ready to take the reigns again, but only to find her former assistant is not only back, but meaner than ever.

The book also shines a light on how technology really disrupted the fashion industry specifically the publishing side for magazines. I look at current magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Glamour, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, etc. wondering if they struggled to figure out how to keep up with the evolving times like Glossy portrays in the book.

Overall I really enjoyed the character development, the mini plot lines, and the pace of the book. You really fall in love with Imogen and her life (her lawyer husband, adorable son, and YouTuber daughter) while also despising Eve, hoping her true colors will be shown by the end (which they are!!)

If you like or LOVE the movie The Devil Wears Prada then you enjoy reading this novel. Thanks for stopping by and see you for my next post!
